Ok. Everyone I am trying to figure out what time will be better to have the 2013 MBA annual deer and hog hunt. Do we keep it at the same time ( second weekend in October) or try a different time. Open for ideals.

Wish that I would have went in the past so that I would have a better feel for the hunt. If the hog population is very high, it 'could' be possible that a hunt after deer season could have more participation as there are no other seasons open at that time to compete against the hunt. A hunt in late February or early March for hogs might be real popular. On the other hand, if hogs are not readily seen or hunted on the refuge then that probably wouldn't work.

Stringwacker in the past we have ran into the problems of to many squirrel hunters shooting at hogs with 22's. No fun being in a tree and hearing rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-etc. knowing they are shooting from ground level. They changed the law on the refuges to where you can only shoot hogs with whatever is legal for deer hunting. That helped and we changed the time of the hunt to before squirrel season. Now for the last three years we have only had one time that the weather was cool. All the other times it has been ninety degrees are so. We have people taking hunting trips to other states at this time also. You can not have it in November or December because of the regular deer season and draw hunts on the refuges. We can not have it in February or March because the refuges are not open. We could do it in April when Turkey season open at panther swamp, but you could not hunt deer. So if we want to do it when it is cooler it will have to be in January. Now what weekend. The ladder part of January is bad for some of the people that come every year because of their refuges open toward the end of the month around Natchez. So from the people I have talked to looks like now the best time maybe the first or second weekend in January.

That's a tough situation for sure. I believe the hunt would have its greatest turnout when other season opportunities didn't conflict on the dates. I have never been simply because I like to hunt my property when the season is open.
I know that Dahomey had an experimental hog hunt in March a couple of years back...not sure if it is still being held. Regardless, if it hasn't been done perhaps the refuge complexes would allow input into it's season dates and a week special hunt for hogs could be suggested in March before the turkey season opens.
I'm stuck on the March idea because the mosquitoes and snakes are still at bay, but the weather is starting to warm a little by then. Additionally, people have had a few weeks after the season has closed for the passion to return. I think March would be crazy good for turnout.
Of course, if the March dates just aren't going to happen because the refuge (or other refuges) are closed, then January is the next best option though I think I lot of people get burned out by then.

We will have the MBA annual deer and hog hunt the second weekend January. I believe the days will be 10th, 11th and 12th. The Hunt will again be hosted by the Yazoo Bow hunters. You can hunt either Panther Swamp or Hillside Federal wildlife management area. All you need to hunt theses two places is a permit. The permit will cost you $15.00 for the year. To obtain the T.R Complex Annual Public Use Permit, submit a completed Hunt Permit Application (available at www.fws.gov/trcomplex) or a plain sheet of (8 1/2 X11 ) paper with the compete name, address and telephone number for each applicant to USFWS, 728 Yazoo Refuge Road, Hollandale, Ms. 38748. Enclose a money order (NO CASH) or check payable to USFWS which includes $15.00 for each permit requested. Yazoo Bow hunters have camper hookups and a place for tents or a cot. There is a fee per person that stays over night to help with camp Swayzes electric and water bill. I believe it is $15.00 dollars a night. You can get your permits online at www.fws.gov/trcomplex This is new for this year. ;D
